Post-Impressionism
"Post-Impressionists … felt the need to construct private pictorial worlds upon the foundations of Impressionism." — Roger Fry
The term post-Impressionist comes from the art critic Roger Fry in his exhibition “Manet and the Post-Impressionists” in 1910-1911. Like the Impressionists before them, the post-Impressionists were not a tight knit group of artists, but for lack of a better term, the name Post-Impressionist quickly applied itself to the art movement directly following Impressionism.
Georges Seurat was interested in pointillism and color theory, and the effect that tiny pigments had on people. Paul Cezanne enjoyed studying landscapes with thick, blotchy patches of paint, as well as creating still lifes. Vincent van Gogh amplified the use of color as emotion in his numerous paintings of the lower classes and French cities. Paul Gauguin sought to escape the corruption of modernity in Tahiti, fascinated by the different cultures he found there.
Although many post-Impressionists were influenced by the importance of color from the preceding era, it ceased to be about capturing fleeting impressions, and more about exploring the relationship between colors and emotion.
Other important post-Impressionist painters include: Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, and Henri Edmond-Cross. (x)
